                         THE VISIGOTHS (version 2.0)

                    by Jess Balsinde (jbalsinde@ucsd.edu)

(v1.0 released January 29, 1998)

Come visit the Spanish Civilization II Site, where this scenario and
all others I have designed to date are described in detail!

WHAT'S NEW?

Version 2.0 of "The Visigoths" changes many many things with respect to the
previous version. I would even say it's almost a whole new scenario! Better
than writing down here the changes, I decided to re-write entirely this
document. Thus, keep reading please.

BACKGROUND

In 567 AD Leovigild --probably the best of all Visigothic rulers-- is
about to be crowned king. He is the first leader of Spain's history who
recognizes the importance of creating a unified kingdom in the Iberian
peninsula. But the task of putting Hispania under Visigothic rule is
no less than formidable. He has to defeat the Suevi barbarians in the
Northwest, the rebellious Basques and Cantabrians in the North
(collectively called the Northernmen), and the Imperial Byzantine troops
in the Southeast. If that were not enough, he will have to deal with the
always-demanding Franks in the Northeast, the emerging Berbers in the
South, and the periodic unwelcome visits of the Black Death. Can you
create a unified --and above all strong-- Visigothic kingdom in the
Iberian peninsula as well?

INSTALLATION

As indicated above, this scenario will only work with Civ2 version 2.7.81,
i.e the one provided by the Fantastic Worlds scenario disk. Make a new folder
under the Scenarios folder. Call it "Visigoth" and put all the files in it
except extra5.wav. Inside the "Visigoth" folder make a sub-folder called
"Sound" and place extra5.wav in it.

Now, you have to run the sndsetup.bat file, which has to be placed under
the "visigoth" folder (not the "sound" sub-folder!). The following instructions
teach you how:

SNDSETUP.BAT is a little batch file utility which automatically sets up the
sound support for THE VISIGOTHS. It does this in two steps. First, it makes
copies of sound files provided with the scenario if they are used more than
once. Second, it copies and renames sound files from the main Civ2 sound
directory. This way the size of the sound files included with the scenario can
be drastically reduced.

How to use sndsetup.bat:
You can use sndsetup.bat like a normal program. Either run it by
doubleclicking on it in Windows Explorer, or by using "Execute..." in the
Start menu, or run it in a DOS box from the command line. If sndsetup.bat
runs into a problem (which is not very likely) it will let you know. In
this case you might be told to use sndsetup.bat with one or two parameters.
You will also be given help and further instructions about this by the utility.
With the first parameter you can specify the source path, usually the main
Civ2 sound directory. With the second you can specify the target directory,
which is the sound directory of the scenario. An example would be :

sndsetup.bat c:\mps\civ2\sound\ c:\mps\civ2\scenario\visigoth\sound\
(The backslash at the end of the path is necessary.)

However, running sndsetup without parameters should work just fine if you
a) have the regular sounds installed in the main Civ2 sound directory and b)
sndsetup.bat is located in the same directory as the Visigoth scenario.
If a) is not the case (because you have installed a ModPack or so) run
sndsetup with the path of the directory where the regular sounds are in as
a parameter.

These instructions and the batch file itself were prepared by Chris Schlobach
(uzsn8y@uni-bonn.de). Thanks Chris!

Now, you can finally play!!!

RULES & VICTORY CONDITIONS

The Visigoths v1.0 was an empire-building scenario. Version 2.0 changes it to
the objectives system. To balance the things, the scenario is now shorter, 145
(each turn is one year). "The Visigoths" cover the epoch of Spain's history
between the crowning of Leovigild (568 AD -the scenario begins two years
earlier though) and the invasion of Iberia by the Moors (711 AD).

There are 111 objectives. The Visigoths are set as protagonists. At the
beginning the Visigoths control 25 of them. They and need >30 for a marginal
defeat, >55 for stalemate, >80 for a marginal victory, and >100 for a decisive
victory.

The scenario is set up at difficulty level Deity. Only at this level of play
it will pose a challenge.

These are the cities that are considered objectives and the number of points
they are worth each:

VISIGOTHS (25) BYZANTINES (38) SUEVI (26)
Toletum (capital) (x3) C. Spartaria (x3)	Bracara (capital) (x3)
Hispalis (x3) Basti (x3) Lucus (x3)
Emerita (x3) Urci (x3) Auriense (x3)
Tarraco (x3) Gades (x3) Portucale (x3)

Calagurris (x3) Massilia
Amaia Burdigala

Some tips.- It is recommended that you play as the Visigoths in this scenario.
Not only are they the most numerous, but also count with the best units at the
beginning of the scenario. In addition, they are the only ones who can field
veteran units. Do not be fooled however; conquering enemy cities will cost you
blood, sweat and tears. This is because ALL enemy cities are walled from the
beginning and the defensive numbers of your enemies are enough to defeat your
units easily. Be patient, very good units are to come. In the meantime, develop
your territories. I mean, make your cities strong, create a good net of
communications, establish commercial routes... do what the Visigoths did not
do: create a strong kingdom. This way the pace of research will increase,
allowing you to obtain the units you need to conquer Hispania.

Playing the Suevi, or Byzantines could offer an interesting challenge to
experienced players. The other civs were NOT designed fr the human player.

ADVANCES

There are substantial changes to the technology tree to better fit the
milieu. The tech paradigm is 25/10 (advances take 2.5 times longer than in
normal games). The terrain around your cities is quite underdeveloped i.e. it
does not generate much trade. Therefore, research goes very slowly. You could
always try to increase it by running out of money...

UNITS

Many new units in this scenario. I even made some brand-new ones for version
2.0. Some of the units are common for all the participants in the scenario, and
some others are civilization-specific. I was suggested once that it is usually
helpful to have all the units listed in the readme. But I know too that MPS
says that half the fun is in the discovery... whatever. Keep in mind that you
are about to enter the Dark Ages, where knowledge was close to zero. In other
words, you'll have to figure out yourself (added difficulty, you may call it).
Just note that each civ begins with a very powerful leader, whose slaying will
reap huge benefits to the killer. Conversely, if you lose your leader, you've
lost the game and should retire.

WONDERS OF THE WORLD

Not all WoWs are available in this scenario. Some of them are already built
at the beginning of the scenario but their effects have expired. Many of these
come from "Spanish Pride", and others are from a "Second Punic War" scenario
that I never completed. The 'buildable' wows (the Visigothic ones) were
designed for this scenario, and some new ones were added for version 2.0.

To keep you in a typically Dark Ages ignorance mod, I will not list here the
wonders available for building in the scenario... just find out yourself
(survival of the fittest)

Tips: Because there are no diplomats or spies in this scenario, I would
recommend you to build the "Codex Revisus" (Marco Polo's) if you wanna know
what your rivals are doing. Another important wonder to have is "Horseshoe
Arch" (Oracle) because civil disorders are very frequent (this is historically
accurate; Visigothic rule over Hispania was filled with civil wars, riots, and
disorders).

MISCELLANEOUS

The title.gif depicts the church of San Pedro de la Nave, in Zamora, Castile-
Len. It was built by the Visigoths in 691 AD, which makes it one of the oldest
preserved churches in Western Europe.

(The Black Death -- yes, it's a nuke in disguise... Global warming???)

CREDITS

The map used in this scenario was made by Pedro Lpez Rodrguez. The Byzantine
Cavalry and Horse Knight units are from Steven Strayer (The Fascist Patch). The
rabbit terrain icon is from Frdric Meuni. The "Urbe Regia", and "Code of
Justinian" icons from Harlan Thompson's Vikings scenario. I do not remember
where I took the King unit from, sorry. If it's yours, let me know so I can
write your name here. The Black Death icon is from Hein Valk (the 4th Challenge
Game).

The rest of new units and new graphics were either created by me or adapted
from other Microprose scenarios. Ifyou want to use any of the units I have
created/modified, please go ahead, but give written credit, (that is,
acknowledge their origin somewhere in a text file just like this one), and do
not remove my initials (JBR) from the graphics! I would really like to know why
most of the people ignore this simple request.

A big thankyou to Don Ramn Menndez Pidal, whose third volume of the "Historia
de Espaa" (Espasa-Calpe, Madrid, 1940) was instrumental in achieving historical
accuracy. A big thankyou as well to my sister Bel, who passed the book on to me.
